Peter’s Playhouse
New College of California president Martin Hamilton may end up being the fall guy for the most recent financial misdealings at the school, but in reading the news from a decade ago, it’s clear the sordid mess isn’t all his doing. In fact, given that New College trustee Peter Gabel — president of New College for 20 years — was responsible for an almost identical display of contempt for students, faculty, and more importantly, the law, we suggest the buck, if anywhere, rightly stops there.
Given this unsavory history, it’s amazing to us the school wasn’t shut down long ago. Indeed, this may yet come to pass. Either way, it looks like the beginning of the end for Peter’s Playhouse—a change that is long overdue.
Lest we lose focus amongst all the charges and denials that lay ahead in the coming weeks and months, we recommend concerned alumni and other friends of New College take a moment to read the student newspaper, New College Observer, from Fall 1995, as well as browse the San Francisco Bay Guardian articles and letters from 1995-6. As students then cogently remarked, “Community isn’t possible without sharing power.”
