Beginning of the End
The documentation of the end of democracy in the US by Jerry Sanders in his book Peddlers of Crisis, puts 1948 (when the secret national security infrastructure was signed into law under President Truman) as the beginning of the end. Likewise, the legislation enabling the Federal Reserve to operate without Congressional oversight two years later, signaled the opportunity for the financial coup d’etat described by Matt Taibbi in the current issue of Rolling Stone. Perhaps the most prescient of scholars as this crisis unfolded under Reagan was Walter Karp, author of Indispensable Enemies.
