Paying for the Crimes

As the Spanish judge who indicted Pinochet launches an investigation into the Bush/Cheney regime, it is well to remind ourselves of the tools of deterrence. Incarceration is one form of punishment for transgressing social norms, but public humiliation is also a deterrent to future violations of moral values. Loss of privileges or assets as well. Making amends to those harmed by one’s immoral acts involves paying for the crimes in one way or another.
