China Syndrome

U.S. Department of Energy finally acknowledges that assessing the damage from radioactive contamination at the Hanford Nuclear Reservation in Washington state should precede and guide the estimated $50 billion cleanup. We are reminded of an earlier commentary posted at Skookum on the deadly combination of scientific arrogance and human corruptability. The lethal concentration of power—both physical and political—required for nuclear energy and weaponry is a hazard we should avoid repeating at all costs.
