Party Line

A commission of Party bosses is inspecting a madhouse. All two hundred patients leap to their feet as one and shout: ‘Life is getting better! Life is getting happier!’

Only one of the Party bosses has noticed a rather glum-looking fellow standing off by himself who has not joined in. Poor wretch, he thinks. To be cut off from the world like that. He approaches the man and asks, ‘Tell me, comrade, why did you not shout our dear leader’s words with the others?’

‘Oh that,’ the man says. ‘I just work here. I’m not insane.’
