New College For Sale

For those who might have missed the obscure article last Monday, New College of California’s North Bay campus in Santa Rosa has closed down.

In other news, the school has failed to meet the deadline for selecting an interim president set by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges. New College also this week missed the deadline for depositing escrow funds with the U.S. Department of Education. With both accreditation and student loan programs on the line, 2007 is not ending on a hopeful note.

For sale signs have been posted on at least two of the school’s buildings in San Francisco.

  1. Wow, missing a US DoE filing deadline is a big deal, those Feds do not play softball. Not making a prompt press release about it is really BIG deal and could have legal consequences. They had better either be working closely with the DoE or have some VERY good attorneys on the job.

  2. Which buildings are for sale? I am looking into the problems at New College for an article in the SF Business Times.

  3. The Creamery theater arts building across from the Valencia Street administrative offices, and the Casa Loma Hotel, which was intended to become student dorms. They are possibly listed under the Arlene Francis Foundation, one of New College’s landlords, and the family foundation of New College trustee Peter Gabel.
