Not a Puzzlement

An inquiring reader asked why the faculty council of New College of California hasn’t been more forceful in opposing the delinquent board of trustees led by Peter Gabel. The answer, in a nutshell, is that they — like the trustees — are by and large his cronies.

Like most trustees who passed through the school’s doors over the last three decades, much of the remaining faculty were Gabel/Hamilton appointees. That’s why we called it a cult — no dissent allowed.

Expecting a mostly incompetent, unqualified, and subservient body of individuals to rise up in defiance of the petty tyrants who gave them their jobs, is hardly a prospect to hang our hat on. So we go with the few honest and courageous faculty and staff remaining after decades of cruel purges, and hope the independent students and alumni/ae will prevail.
