Responsibility to Think

Kathy Kelly recently remarked that, “Americans have abdicated their adult responsibility to think.” The subtext of that statement is that Americans resent those who do—especially those who, like Kelly, not only educate themselves on social issues, but then in turn act on their convictions.

In my experience, it has been those who consider themselves inherently socially superior who are the worst offenders. In fact, the habitual opinions of the liberal elite that have established the social conventions and political customs of mainstream American thought, are what constantly undermine authentic community educators and organizers like Ms. Kelly.

As Kathy observed, risk-taking for democracy is extremely rare and short-lived in American society. In my opinion, that goes every bit as much for ordinary citizens as it does for the most powerful politicians.
