Historic Hysteria

In her book A Distant Mirror, Barbara Tuchman describes the three-part basis of social disintegration in 14th century Europe: economic collapse, political dysfunction, and religious hysteria. This was also the century of the Black Plague, which undoubtedly contributed to these three symptoms.

Looking at the present social setting in the United States, it seems all we are lacking is the catalyst of an incurable contagious disease; the other ingredients of panic are already in place.
