Caucasus Cottage Crude

A new cottage industry in the Caucasus has sprung up through the creative capture of crude oil by pipeline tapping. In Dagestan alone, 27,000 tons were liberated by locals in 2008, some of which was converted to diesel in mom-and-pop, backwoods mini-refineries. While amounting to a mere 1% of Russian crude shipped via pipeline, the siphoned oil value has the potential to finance much of the region’s wars of independence.
